Michael Balaban and local leaders, Michael and Lynne Markman, joined a delegation of senior representatives from the Jewish Federations of North America in both Ethiopia and Israel this past week as the first flights of Ethiopian Jews make aliyah to become Israeli citizens. They met with the olim and heard personal stories about living in difficult conditions and experiencing escalating antisemitism, current realities that reinforce the importance of Operation Zur Israel. The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia proudly raised $200,000 of the overall national campaign, which will bring 3,000 Ethiopian immigrants to reconnect with their families and freely express their right to religion without fear of persecution. A group of 42 women from the Jewish Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy and Women of Vision affinity groups traveled to Georgia and Alabama for an impactful Civil Rights Mission to the American South. The trip focused on the fight for equality, the leaders behind the civil rights movement, and the historic relationship between the Black and Jewish communities. The Jewish Federation’s Women of Vision affinity group held their annual Spring Event on May 19, featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Megan Twohey. Twohey is the co-author of “SHE SAID," a book that tells the behind the scenes story of her and Jodi Kantor’s 2017 investigation of Harvey Weinstein. View the photo recap here. Women of Vision transforms the lives of Jewish women and girls in Greater Philadelphia and in Israel by supporting social justice and change through educational programming, hands-on philanthropy and grantmaking.

The Jewish Federation’s Mitzvah Food Program is partnering with DoorDash to expand opportunities to better serve the community at no additional cost to the Jewish Federation and its clients. DoorDash has offered selected non-profits free delivery services through the end of 2022 and plans to extend into 2023 and beyond. The current partnership provides deliveries within a 10-mile radius from the pantry location and even allows clients to opt in for the service the day of the delivery. With this additional offering, Mitzvah Food Program will be able to eliminate the current delivery waitlist as well as have the flexibility to fulfill deliveries when volunteer drivers are unavailable.

"Hadar Goldin - The Final Peace" Exhibit
June 1 - 17, 2022 at the Kaiserman JCC

Experience the early works of military hero Hadar Goldin, an IDF soldier killed and held captive by Hamas during Operation Protective Edge. Hadar was a talented artist and writer whose work has been presented to the United Nations and shown through traveling exhibits around the world. The Kaiserman JCC and Jewish Federation, in partnership with the Consulate General of Israel in New York and the Hadar Goldin Foundation, are bringing the exhibit to the community for two weeks.

Israel & Jewish Life on Campus: The Latest Trends with Dr. Noam Weissman & Gabe Greenberg

June 14, 2022 | 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Part of the Hadar Goldin Exhibit at the Kaiserman JCC

Join Dr. Noam Weissman, Executive Vice President of OpenDor Media, and Gabe Greenberg, Executive Director of Penn Hillel, for a discussion about the latest trends regarding Israel and Jewish Life on campus. This workshop will give students tips on how to create engaged and meaningful dialogue about Israel and being Jewish on campus, inside and outside classes long before they get there. It will also introduce parents to the challenges students face today.

Theatre Ariel Presents Songbirds and Pomegranates

Part of the Hadar Goldin Exhibit at the Kaiserman JCC

Enjoy a performance of Songbirds and Pomegranates, by actors from Theatre Ariel. With texts and music curated by Deborah Baer Mozes and Jesse Bernstein, Theatre Ariel reflects on the life, artwork and legacy of Hadar Goldin through a dynamic reading of poetry, theatre and contemporary Israeli folk and pop music.

JFRE at The Civic

June 14, 2022 | 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Join the Jewish Federation Real Estate (JFRE) group for an evening of networking, drinks and appetizers at The Civic, an adaptive reuse of the former St. Joe’s Hospital. After over 100 years of being a public center for health and safety, MMPartners was able to save the hospital by converting it into 88 apartments with 35,000 square feet of commercial and retail space.

Cemetery Cleanup

June 26, 2022 | 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Har Nebo Cemetery

Honor those at rest by joining your community for a cemetery cleanup at Har Nebo, a local historic Jewish cemetery. Volunteer tasks will include raking, picking up trash and clipping overgrown vines. The cleanup will end with a memorial service to honor all of those buried at the cemetery.
