Restoring and protecting cemeteries into the future is a challenge debated by communities of all faiths, all over the country. Earlier this year, a group of local Jewish volunteers created the Friends of Jewish Cemeteries (FJC), a special initiative of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, to explore strategies for improving poor conditions at mature properties, particularly in the oldest sections. While community clean-ups are invaluable, professional skills and equipment are necessary for extensively damaged areas.

Few things strengthen Jewish values and foster lifelong connections to Jewish life more deeply than summer camp. As participation in some traditional Jewish activities has declined, camp has become a primary educational experience for children. Unfortunately, often  financial barriers keep Jewish camp from being a reality for some families. The Jewish Federation remains committed to focusing available funds on families most in need and to best support camps with a history of serving campers in the Greater Philadelphia region.

Applications for the 2022 summer session open the week of October 11th, and will be awarded on a rolling basis so that families are aware of financial support in a more timely manner. Click here to learn more about the Jewish summer camp resources in our community. 

Over the summer, you may have noticed bright pink billboards throughout Philadelphia – an initiative by the Kraft Group and JewBelong to call out antisemitism. Philadelphia is one of six cities across the country that participated in the campaign as a way to give people a greater sense of pride in being Jewish and educate the broader community about antisemitism. With the horrifying spike of hate against Jews in the U.S., these billboards are intended to raise awareness of and provoke a conversation about the hate that happens around the Jewish community. Danielle is no stranger to leadership positions at the Jewish Federation, and officially began her new role as Chair of the Jewish Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council this September. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as a member of the Board of Trustees, Board Member of Women’s Philanthropy, Board Chair Emeritus of NextGen and member of the Campaign Team to her new position. Danielle looks forward to working with the JCRC professionals to continue their incredible work to build strong alliances for the Jewish community through social justice initiatives, public policy advocacy work, and engagement with local, state, and federal elected officials.
